Forty years ago, the late U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson began a tradition that remains strong and proud throughout the world: Earth Day. On April 22nd, the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and other Madison organizations will celebrate the anniversary of this noble holiday. Here are some events happening around town.
- April 20-21, all day: The Fourth Annual Nelson Institute Earth Day Conference will take place at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. The two-day conference features lectures by professors at UW-Madison and from other universities, the president of the Wilderness Society, Governor Jim Doyle, Chancellor Biddy Martin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and many more.
- April 20: Be sure not to miss many of the other events happening on and around campus. Go to the Overture Center to witness the tile and mosaic exhibit, Echoes of the Earth, and to see the special Earth Day concert at 8PM (both are free!).
- April 24, 9-noon: If you want to get down and dirty, the UW Arboretum is hosting a special restoration project. Join in the fun and take care of the Earth that has taken care of you for so long.
